Maria Rosa said her 67-year-old husband died at dawn at a hospital in Porto, in the north of the country, where for nine months he had been treated for lung cancer.
Rosa, a businessman, was interim president of Guinea-Bissau between September 2003 and October 2005. He withdrew from politics last year following the first round of presidential elections which were interrupted by a military coup.
Rosa was honorary consul of Belgium and headed the national electoral commission during Guinea-Bissau’s first multi-party elections in 1994.
